Sukanta Das's creative preoccupation is about portraying the relationship between mankind and nature. The human forms might appear as the predominant imagery on his canvas, but his core concern is the bonding between human emotions and nature's peace and harmony. While the human figure symbolizes the emotional turmoil, nature, although represented as ornamentation here, plays yet another role - of a pacifier, the soothing balm.
Says the artist: "Human beings and nature are the primary elements I paint. These two being the principal source of my inspiration, I love to paint their inter relationship and dependence of each other."
While the maddening pace of modern life sucks away the beauty and innocence in us, Das recalls the humanizing factor which can be reinstated by being in the midst of nature. By moving on in life the gaps created or the yearning and nostalgia can be addressed by the eternal Eden(s) of mother Earth; just in time to replenish the dreams and desires of those longing hearts.
Born in Kolkata, Sukanta Das completed his Bachelors in Visual Arts in first division from the Ravindra Bharathi University (1996). A recipient of the National Scholarship he has had eight solo exhibitions. He participated in a number of group shows in the country and abroad. His works are part of some prestigious public and private collections in India and overseas.
