A Canadian artist living in Hyderabad for almost a decade now is deeply influenced by the city's energy: “the intense color, the heat, the urgency and noise, the clash and clang and contradiction, the sudden sweetness, beauty and spontaneous courtesies that are urban India".
Inheriting a certain culture and later traversing yet another cultural space Vera realizes being evolved in a 'third personal culture'. And painting is a method for her to inhabit and understand that third space. Says she: "It constitutes a base from which to react to the immediate and the larger worlds".
Painting for this artist is a language with which to discuss things herself. "The relationship with each canvas unfolds over the time of its making and is, finally, the artifact that remains at the end of this visual conversation. Personal history, the ongoing encounter with the world as a local and global citizen, and the emotion which accompanies and informs that encounter - all are brought into play and influence the way a painting evolves. Each canvas is undertaken in the spirit of enquiry into the layered experience of contact and contradiction, of revelation and confusion".
Before Hyderabad, Vera lived and worked in Japan. She recently mounted her solo exhibition at DAIRA Centre for Arts and Culture. Besides group shows, she was part of a residency project conducted by DAIRA: 'Walk of Art' in 2003. Her works are in private collections in Canada, the United States, Netherlands and India
